KNITKIND / 02

A clear plan for every change.

Distribute kfb increases or k2tog decreases across one knit row, with protected edge stitches and a step-by-step count check.

Evenly spaced shaping

YOUR PROJECT

One plain knit row. At most 500 shaping operations. Edges stay unchanged.

K = knit normally · kfb = 1 stitch → 2 · k2tog = 2 stitches → 1

WORKED EXAMPLE

Try a worked example

From 80 stitches to 90

Keep 2 stitches at each edge. The 76 interior stitches can hold ten kfb increases. The plan consumes all 80 original stitches and produces 90; each of the eleven ordinary-stitch gaps differs by at most one stitch.

FROM INPUT TO PLAN

How to use this result

  1. 01

Enter the stitches already on the needle, the desired count after this row, and the protected edge count on each side.

  2. 02

Work the instructions left to right as the row is worked. K means knit that many ordinary stitches; kfb uses one old stitch to make two; k2tog uses two old stitches to make one.

  3. 03

The numbered input positions refer to the original row. A simple knit row with at most one operation per eligible stitch or pair is supported. Check shaping placement for your own pattern.

THE TOOLKIT

Four small tools. One thoughtful project.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers

Read the calculation method ↗
What does an impossible result mean?

kfb needs one eligible original stitch per increase; k2tog needs two per decrease. Protected edge stitches cannot be used. Reduce the change or edge count, or split the work across more rows.

How evenly are operations spaced?

Ordinary stitches are split between, before and after the operations. The gap counts differ by at most one stitch. This is a count distribution, so it may not be perfectly mirrored.

Can I use this for crochet or garment redesign?

The plan explicitly uses knit-row kfb and k2tog instructions. It is not a crochet instruction, lace chart, short-row plan or complete garment grading system.
